Robert Downey, Jr. Takes Viewers on a Whimsical Ride in Sherlock Holmes

Full of wit, charm and intellect, London’s most famous detective takes on the villainous Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) from the first scene of the movie and even kills him…he thinks. But, when the black magic enemy rises from the grave to continue to torture and kill throughout the city of Big Ben, Holmes and his loyal, yet apprehensive assistant Watson (Jude Law) re-ignite their mission to put an end to the slayings for good.

While struggling with Watson’s girlfriend for the attention of his sidekick, Holmes also has a numskull head of Scotland Yard to deal with, who only gets in his way. Not to mention an enticing seductress (Rachel McAdams,) who’s the receiver of may witty, yet dirty jokes and suggestions from Detective Holmes.

I was a tad reluctant to watch Sherlock Holmes at first, but I should have known that Robert Downey, Jr. would take the role of the English crime solver and make it his own, as he does with all his screen roles. I’m sure Downey’s own personal battles contributed to his excellent portrayal of the Old Kingdom’s investigator, who suffered with mental demons as well.

Sherlock Holmes grabs your attention from the very beginning with action and great commentary from the main character. The digital city of London engulfs  you into a time and place where poverty, brothels and disease were rampant.

Director Guy Ritchie achieves putting the audience right in the middle of the  gloomy, crime-ridden streets of the old town.

Downey’s accomplishment of winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Motion Picture is well-deserved. However, Director Guy Ritchie should have been nominated for Best Director.
